What are the Root Canal Treatment Methods?

As Private FARA Dent Oral and Dental Health Polyclinic, we aim to offer high quality and effective treatments to our patients by adopting the latest technological developments and innovative approaches in oral and dental health. In this blog article, we will discuss root canal treatment methods in detail.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is the process of removing infected or damaged pulp tissue on the inside of the tooth, cleaning and shaping the canals, and then filling them with filling material. This treatment preserves the tooth, eliminates the need for extraction and ensures functional use of the tooth.

Root Canal Treatment Methods

  • Primary (Standard) Root Canal Treatment

Primary root canal treatment is the most common treatment method applied when the tooth is infected for the first time. In this method, infected or inflamed pulp tissue in the root canals of the tooth is removed, the canals are cleaned, shaped and filled with special filling material. This process prevents the tooth from getting re-infected and ensures that the tooth remains healthy.

  • Repeat Root Canal Treatment (Retreatment)

Re-canal treatment, which is applied to teeth that have previously undergone root canal treatment but failed or developed re-infection, involves removing old filling materials, re-cleaning and filling the canals. This method allows the removal of infections in areas that were inaccessible or inadequately cleaned during initial treatment.

  • Apical Resection (Apicoectomy)

Apical resection is the surgical removal of infected tissue at the tip of the tooth root. Infected tissue at the root tip is removed, the area is cleaned and resealed. This method is preferred in cases where standard root canal treatment or repeat canal treatment is insufficient and helps to eliminate the infection at the root tip of the tooth.

  • Pulp Capping

Pulp capping, which is applied in cases where a small part of the dental pulp is damaged but remains alive, involves applying a protective coating to the damaged area. This procedure is used in cases of early infection or damage where there is no need to completely remove the nerve tissue of the tooth.

  • Partial Pulpotomy

Partial pulpotomy is the process of removing only part of the infected pulp tissue of the tooth and preserving the remaining healthy pulp. It is generally applied to young patients or teeth with large pulp chambers and ensures the protection of the healthy part of the tooth.

  • Root Canal Repair

The process of treating problems such as cracks, holes or canal obstruction in the tooth root is called root canal repair. It is usually performed with precise surgical techniques under a microscope. This method is preferred in cases where there is structural damage in the root canal and ensures that the tooth remains healthy.
